A step-by-step guide: repurposing a youtube video into multiple pieces of short-form content

Creating content consistently is essential for staying relevant and engaging your audience. But creating new content all the time can be time-consuming and overwhelming. That’s why repurposing content is a game-changer. And I want to walk you through my process of turning ONE piece of content into 50 each week. It might sound daunting, but with the right strategies and tools, you can do it too!

Breaking Down the Process

The foundation of my content strategy, and this entire process is hero content. This is a long-form piece of content that’s big and impactful. For me, it’s YouTube videos, but it could be a podcast, a newsletter, or a blog post for you. The key is to choose content that it has one (or both) of the following factors: it’s searchable and/or it’s evergreen, meaning it can provide value over a long period.

YouTube Video to Podcast

Start by pulling the audio straight from your YouTube video and publishing it on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and other podcasting platforms that you choose. You only need to add an intro and an outro, and you’ve got a podcast episode. This might require a little bit of editing, especially if your video includes visuals that don’t translate well to audio. But this process is pretty straightforward and doesn’t consume a ton of extra time.

Newsletter for my Email Subscribers

Next, use the outline and transcript of the YouTube video to create a newsletter. Summarize the main points and provide enough value so your readers find it useful. We want them to get a ton of information by JUST reading the email, but for those who want to learn more we entice them to either (1) go watch the full YouTube video or (2) go listen to the podcast episode. You can do this by including a call to action at the end of the email.

Blog Post + Podcast Show Notes

This is where you can provide a ton of value through long-form written content by turning your video transcript into a detailed blog post. Add insights and additional information to make it comprehensive and SEO-friendly. This not only helps with search engine rankings but also provides another way for your audience to consume your content. I like to include both my podcast show notes AND the blog post all in one so people can consume the content in whichever way they prefer.

Social Media Posts

Now this is where it can vary and can get a bit more time-consuming since you will be creating content FROM that original YouTube video. Remember: I have been doing this for 10+ years so I am able to efficiently create a ton of content. Start slow, and start small, and work your way up to produce more.

  • Instagram: Create at least five different posts. This can include a reel promoting the video, a carousel summarizing key points, quotes, graphics, and short clips.

  • LinkedIn: Repurpose your Instagram content. Adjust the format if needed, like turning carousels into PDFs, and post at least five times.

  • TikTok: Record five new TikTok videos based on your YouTube content. Instead of just cutting clips, rerecord relevant points for better engagement.

  • YouTube Shorts: Extract at least five shorts from your main video. These are quick and easy ways to repurpose your content.

  • Threads/Tweets: Write ten different posts using quotes and thoughts from your video. These can be scheduled throughout the week

  • Pinterest Pins: Design 15 different pins that link back to your hero content. This helps drive traffic and leverages Pinterest’s powerful SEO capabilities.

Tools and Efficiency

To make this process smooth and efficient, I rely on a few key tools:

  • Descript: This tool is a game-changer for recording, editing, and transcribing YouTube videos. It allows me to strip audio for podcasts and create transcripts for other content pieces.

  • Canva: For all my visual content needs. I create Instagram posts, Pinterest pins, and more using Canva’s templates and design tools.

  • ChatGPT: I use this AI tool to generate ideas and optimize content. By feeding it my transcript, I can pull out quotes, create social media posts, and refine my descriptions.

Implementation and Distribution

Creating all this content is great, but it needs to be published and shared effectively. Here’s how I manage and distribute my content:

  • Airtable: I use Airtable to track the status, visuals, and captions for all my content. It helps me see everything at a glance and stay organized.

  • Later: This scheduling tool is perfect for auto-publishing content. I schedule Instagram posts, LinkedIn posts, Pinterest pins, and more to ensure consistent posting without constant manual effort. While I prefer to manually post on TikTok and Threads for better customization, having a system in place ensures nothing falls through the cracks.

Repurposing content can seem overwhelming, but starting small is key. Begin by transforming one long-form piece into a few additional pieces of content. As you get more comfortable, you can increase the number of pieces you create. By following this process, you’ll maximize your content’s reach and save time.
